The Wilmington City Council this week will take up a request from the police department to form a Gang Investigative Unit.
Officials say they need a long-term strategy to fight the recent rise in gang violence.
If the council approves the plan, the unit would be operational within six weeks, and would be made up of one sergeant and four officers who would devote their time to dismantling the gang network that police say is now prevalent in the Port City.
The council would have to agree to the more than $142,00 price tag.
Council members will take up the matter Tuesday at 6:30 pm at City Hall.
