A man accused of killing a Wilmington woman last year will undergo an evaluation for mental retardation.
Andrew Bernard Adams is charged in the beating death of 24-year-old Latricia Scott.
The state wants to seek the death penalty in the case, but a defense expert has suggested that Adams suffers from diminished mental capacity.
A New Hanover County judge signed the order for official testing.
If Adams is deemed mentally retarded, the state will not have the death penalty as an option for punishment should Adams be convicted in the case.
So far, a trial date has not been set.
