Changes are in store for folks who want to volunteer with New Hanover County Schools.
The school board Tuesday night approved a new policy that establishes requirements for two different types of volunteers.
Those who volunteer in classrooms under a school employee's supervision will not have to undergo background checks. Volunteers who may spend time alone with students, one example being a chaperone for an overnight field trip, will have to have background checks.
Another change: volunteers will no longer be allowed to work in the front offices of schools. Officials want to ensure that only employees have access to student records.
