The country's largest teacher union is out with annual public school spending estimates. North Carolina's ranking improved slightly since last year.
We're ranked 42 out of 50. The ranking was 45 the prior year.
Still, spending fell nearly $200 dollars per student compared to the year before.

One veteran police officer is off the job in Wrightsville Beach and two more are on probation, but the chief of police won't say why.
The three were the subjects of internal investigations over the last year as a result of complaints to the chief from within the department.

Wrightsville Beach leaders will hold a press conference today about an investigation involving three police officers.
The officers were placed on administrative leave last month.
So far, officials have refused to release details, citing personnel laws.

Brunswick County commissioner Charles Warren is no longer on the county Social Services board.
Commissioners voted to remove Warren from his post as DSS chair.
They say Warren abused his power when he suspended a fellow board member, and when he kept a news reporter out of a public meeting.

The ACC responded after the ejection of 2-former NC-State basketball players, at a game last weekend.
Chris Corchiani and Tom Gugliotta were thrown out of NC-State's game against Florida State.
Last night, ACC officials publicly reprimanded the official who ejected them.

One person is dead and two others injured after a car crash in Brunswick County.
One of those injured is a Southport police officer.
The wreck happened yesterday afternoon on N-C 211 near Midway Road.
The Highway Patrol says an SUV rear-ender the police cruiser, sending it into the path of a minivan.
The driver of the minivan was pronounced dead at the scene.

Jury selection begins today in the Matthew Baber murder trial.
Baber is accused of gunning down James Murdock as he sat in a car outside a home in Calabash in 2008.
The defense is expected to question Baber's mental health at the time of the shooting.

Snow flurries fell in parts of the Triangle yesterday, causing slick roads and several accidents.

A New Hanover County mother is charged with assaulting two students at Ashley High School.
The fight occurred February 7th outside of a classroom.
Authorities say Shellie Rodriguez's 16-year-old daughter got into an altercation with another female student.
According to investigators, Rodriguez assaulted that student along with another who tried to intervene.

Police are looking for three suspects they say robbed a taxi driver at gunpoint.
The men asked for a ride to Carolina Beach and then forced the driver to pull over into the parking lot of Codington Elementary School.
The suspects took the driver's cash and his car keys before fleeing.
The cab driver was not hurt.

North Carolina shoppers are eligible for rebates when you buy new home appliances and replace older, less efficient models.
North Carolina's appliance replacement and rebate program has been one of the nation's most effective - distributing more than $10 million in rebates.
Rebates will be sent in the form of a prepaid debit cards.
Online purchases are not eligible.

A Brunswick County ABC store caught fire after a truck slammed into the front entrance.
It happened around 8:30 last night in Boiling Spring Lakes.
No one inside the store was hurt,
The driver of the truck was taken to the hospital. We don't know the extent of his injuries.
The front of the store sustained extensive damage from the fire.

Wilmington Police have identified three people killed in a vehicle crash.
Raphael Samuel, Yashica White and Shatia Hankins all died in the accident on Forest Hills Road.
Another male passenger was injured but is expected to survive.
A Dodge SUV driven by Samuel hit a tree.
Police say speed was a factor in the crash.
