Brian Berger removed from office 5-21

9:00 a.m. Tuesday

Brian Berger is no longer on the Board of New Hanover County Commissioners.
The board used an amotion hearing to remove Berger from office.
The four hour hearing ended with a 3 to 2 vote against Berger.
His colleagues say Berger was a distraction and a risk to safety--and moved to strip him of his commissioner title.

Wilmington police officer investigation 5-21

8:59 a.m. Tuesday

A Wilmington Police officer is on administrative duty after crashing an unmarked car while on duty.
Officer Adrienne Dillon was involved in the accident last week.
Dillon was also involved in a crash in her personal car over the weekend.
She has been with the department since 2003.

Name change for Charlotte Bobcats 5-21

8:58 a.m. Tuesday

We're expecting a MAJOR announcement from the Charlotte Bobcats today - a name change.
A person familiar with the situation says owner Michael Jordan will change the team's name to the Charlotte Hornets.
The change would take effect in the 2014-2015 season.

Bill that would nix Wrightsville Beach smoking ban likely dead 5-16

May 16

A measure that would put a stop to the smoking ban at Wrightsville Beach now has little chance of being considered by state lawmakers.
Senate leaders say the bill will not make it to a full vote before the end of this week.
This is Crossover Week--and bills not passed by at least one chamber of the legislature by Friday are usually dropped for the rest of the session.

UNC Wilmington considers cutting athletic teams 5-16

May 16

UNC Wilmington may have a much smaller sports department next year.
A committee has recommended the university cut five sports teams, including Men's and Women's swimming and diving, softball, and men's indoor track and cross country.
The plan stems from money woes within the athletic department.
The school's board of trustees will consider the proposal in the coming weeks.

Northwest Police Officer arrested 5-16

May 16

A police officer in the Brunswick County town of Northwest is charged with soliciting sex from a teenager.
Michael Alan Hayes is accused of using Craigslist to find the girl.
Hayes turned himself in yesterday and has since been released from the Brunswick County jail.

Swimmer missing in Holden Beach 5-15

May 15

The search for a missing swimmer resumes this morning in Holden Beach.
The 21-year-old man was part of a group swimming from Holden Beach to Oak Island.
He was last seen about 5 pm yesterday in Lockwood Folly.
Crews suspended their search around 8 o'clock.

Former high school coach indicted 5-15

May 15

A New Hanover County grand jury has indicted a former high school coach on charges of taking indecent liberties with a student.
Michael Supak was a teacher and coach at Hoggard High until November of last year.
He is accused of kissing a 17-year-old student on the neck.

NC school buses law 5-15

May 15

State lawmakers want to increase the consequences for drivers who fail to stop for school buses picking up or dropping off students.
The bill approved unanimously the House would require those convicted of the misdemeanor charge to receive a minimum $500 fine.
The bill now goes to the Senate.

Wilmington Police conduct death investigations 5-14

May 14

Wilmington Police are conducting death investigations after two people were found dead Sunday in separate incidents.
Investigators have not identified the victims publicly--but they suspect both died from heroin overdoses.
Officers are now waiting for toxicology test results.

Protestors arrested at state legislature 5-14

May 14

Protests at the state legislature led to the arrests of dozens of demonstrators.
In all--49 people were taken into custody for trespassing and related charges.
The group was speaking out on bills they say threaten labor rights and unfairly tax the poor.

NC redistricting trial set 5-14

May 14

Lawsuits challenging how the legislature redrew North Carolina's congressional and legislative maps back in 20-11 will be heard next month.
Democrats say Republicans illegally packed black voters into districts, and spilt voting precincts - to gain more control.
The trial is set for June 4th and 5th.

One shot at Mother's Day gathering 5-13

May 13

Wilmington Police say a Mother's day gathering ended in gunfire.
Officers were called to Robert Strange Park about 8 pm last night.
There they learned--a man had been shot and taken to the emergency room.
Investigators expect the victim to be okay.
So far--no arrests have been made.

Revolution production to leave Wilmington 5-13

May 13

The Port City is losing a major Hollywood production.
The TV show Revolution will not film its second season in Wilmington.
Crew members received notice that producers are moving to Texas.
The decision was said to be based on the need for more variety in location shoots.
