Iron Man 3 opens nationwide 5-3

May 3

It's the day some have been anticipating for years.
Iron Man 3 opens in theaters today nationwide.
The film was primarily shot in Wilmington and is North Carolina's biggest production to date.
And it is already breaking records overseas--according to the Hollywood Reporter, Iron Man 3 scored the biggest opening day ever in China, with $21.5 million.

The trade magazine says the Marvel Studios film has so far earned $307.7 million, surpassing the first Iron Man film, as well as Captain America and Thor.

Iron Man 3 starts Roberty Downey Jr., Gwyenth Paltrow and Don Cheadle.

Boyfriend sentenced in fatal Pender crash 5-2

May 2

A Pender County man will spend at least 12 years in prison after pleading guilty to a crash that killed his girlfriend and sent a pregnant woman and her two children to the hospital.
Authorities say 27-year-old Lance Powers was arguing with his girlfriend when he grabbed her steering wheel and caused the crash on N-C Highway 53 last October.
Jennie Marie Moore died at the scene.
Powers pled guilty to second degree murder.

May Day rally arrests 5-2

May 2

Five people arrested last night during a May Day rally at the Capitol Police have bonded out of jail.
Some wanted their voices to be heard on Immigration reform others on labor rights and budget cuts.
General Assembly Police Chief Jeff Weaver says protestors pushed officers.
That student was charged with assaulting a government official.

NC tax and tag changes 5-2

May 2

North Carolina drivers who have vehicle registration renewals due in September will see the first combined bill.
The Department of Motor Vehicles originally planned to debut the new combined notice for property tax and tags for July renewals.
The program will still take effect on July 1st.
All North Carolina vehicle owners will be part of the new notification system by mid 2014.

Iron Man 3 has huge impact on NC 5-1

May 1

Iron Man 3 created nearly 2,000 jobs in our state and generated about $180 million in spending.
That's according to a report by the Motion Picture Association of America.
The study looked at the impact the movie had on the state during the 13 months it filmed here.
Iron Man 3 opens Friday.

NC unemployment improves 5-1

May 1

The unemployment rate dropped in 99 of North Carolina's 100 counties in March.
The statewide unemployment rate was 8.9 percent, down from 9.2 percent in February.
New Hanover County's unemployment rate fell to 8.8 percent.

NC pre-k bill 5-1

May 1

Lawmakers are backing a bill that would toughen eligibility rules for the state's pre-K program.
The program is free for at-risk four- year- olds in families earning up to $39,000 a year.
If the bill goes through - the maximum would drop to $19,500.

Weekend murder suspect in court 4-29

April 29

A man charged with a weekend murder will make his first court appearance today.
Shannon Mitchell faces second degree murder charges in the shooting death of a man in a mobile home park off of Carolina Beach Road.
Authorities have not said what led to the shooting.
Mitchell is being held without bond.

Fire destroys Wilmington duplex 4-29

April 29

Two people were treated for smoke inhalation after a fire yesterday morning.
Firefighters were called to the 4-hundred block of Rutledge Drive, where they found a duplex in flames.
The house was a total loss.
They believe the fire was accidental.

Charlotte mayor to be named to Obama cabinet 4-29

April 29

President Obama is expected to name Charlotte mayor Anthony Foxx as his nominee as U-S Transportation Secretary.
Foxx announced earlier this year he would not seek re-election as mayor.

Former firefighter faces sexual assault charges 4-26

April 26

A former Wilmington firefighter is being held without bond in Virginia on sexual assault charges.
Robert Hester was fired from his job as a master firefighter last week.
His termination followed his arrest in Fairfax County, Virginia.
Authorities say the charges involve a female acquaintance.

NC mortgage scam 4-26

  Ninety-two people in our state now face investment fraud charges, in a federal sting called "Operation Wax House"
Prosecutors say the suspects cheated investors, bribed bank employees, laundered money and dealt drugs.
The group targeted professional athletes, doctors and others.
So far 66 people have pleaded guilty.//

NC cursive writing 4-26

The General Assembly appears ready to pass a law requiring public schools to teach cursive writing.
The Senate approved a bill that calls for students to write in cursive by the end of fifth grade.

Man accused in 2012 Wilmington murder to be evaluated for mental retardation 4-25

April 25

   A man accused of killing a Wilmington woman last year will undergo an evaluation for mental retardation.

   Andrew Bernard Adams is charged in the beating death of 24-year-old Latricia Scott.

   The state wants to seek the death penalty in the case, but a defense expert has suggested that Adams suffers from diminished mental capacity.

   A New Hanover County judge signed the order for official testing.

   If Adams is deemed mentally retarded, the state will not have the death penalty as an option for punishment should Adams be convicted in the case.

   So far, a trial date has not been set.
